Subject Files 1964-1983; 1972-1982.

This series comprises records retained by the Rev. David L. Vikner, Executive Director of the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME), Lutheran Church in America (LCA). These records are from 1964-1973 with the majority of material dating from 1972-1982. Types of records in this series are primarily topical papers, addresses, and essays authored by Rev. Vikner and presented at missionary conferences, synodical meetings, commencement exercises, executive council meetings, and published in church publications, as well as publications of church-affiliated institutions. Subject matter for these papers and addresses includes the future of mission work, the concept of interdependence as it relates to development of mission policy, LCA relationships with partner churches, and the road to self-support for overseas churches. An item of particular interest is "LCA in World Mission, 1842-1982." This topical paper presents a concise summary of the evolution of mission policy of the LCA and its predecessor bodies. In addition to the papers and addresses in this series, there are also some pieces of correspondence and notes related to various papers. This material is located within the same folder as the particular paper to which it refers. Also included in this series are records containing biographical information for Rev. Vikner, records related to Lutheran medical mission work, and material pertaining to a world mission consultation that occurred in 1970. Rev. Vikner served on this consultation's World Mission Study Group. Records are arranged alphabetically.
